Choral Weekend: 2010

In keeping with our policy of choosing less familiar but accessible choral works with full orchestra we have chosen Mendelssohn's Psalm 42 "As Pants the Hart" for our 2010 choral weekend. This lovely piece was written on the composer's honeymoon trip in 1837. What a tender and deeply felt little work this is, so in keeping with the perfect happiness that Mendelssohn felt at this period! The score is divided into seven sections.

The introduction compares the hart panting after water with the soul thirsting for God. Subsequent lyrical episodes culminate in a wonderful final chorus - a fugue in which the composer gives just as much proof of his technical skill as his unshakable faith. The choir will also prepare one or two of Mendelssohn's exquisite unaccompanied pieces, whilst the orchestra will work on his overture "Ruy Blas".
