Choral Weekend: 2012

At the end of the eighteenth century Joseph Haydn was an international celebrity. Whilst Kapellmeister to Prince Nikolaus of Esterhazy he was commissioned to provide an annual Mass to celebrate the name day of Esterhazy’s wife Princess Maria. The result was a series of six glorious works that give consummate expression to Haydn’s reverent, life affirming faith – “not of the gloomy, tormented kind, but rather cheerful and reconciled” in the words of his friend and biographer Georg Giesinger. The Harmoniesse written in 1802 seems to have cost the composer more effort than any of the others though there is no sign of any effort in this enchanting work which sets a glorious seal on Haydn’s career as a composer of music for the church.
